ABOUT THIS SCALED REPLICA

When producer Irwin Allen’s popular television series Voyage to the Bottom of the Seadebuted its second season on ABC in September, 1965, viewers would note some exciting changes and additions to the show. Voyage was now broadcast in color, the nuclear submarine Seaview had been modified into a sleeker, four-windowed look, and the show would feature an important new star: the Flying Sub, a vehicle that flies through the air at incredible speeds and submerges to travel underwater at great depths.

The Flying Sub (also referred to as the FS-1) quickly became a signature element of the show, featured in almost every episode not only as a quick transport from the Seaviewto land, but as an underwater exploration and defense vehicle that could dock at underwater research laboratories or on other submarines, and do battle with the menagerie of undersea monsters that threatened the Seaview. With its upswept, manta ray-like shape, vivid yellow-and-blue paint scheme, twin stabilizer fins, upper and lower hatches, gleaming headlights and the large forward windows that allowed viewers to actually see Admiral Nelson and Captain Crane (or at least miniature figures of them) at the controls of the craft, the Flying Sub became one of the most familiar and unique sights on ABC television in the 1960s, adding action and excitement to a TV show already overflowing with visual wonders.

Moebius Models presents an authentic 1/32-scale reproduction of the Flying Sub. This spectacular, high-end collectible is a fully finished, large-scale deluxe replica featuring incredible detail, highlighted by authentic lights and sounds. A true work of art created for the discriminating collector, the FS-1 Flying Sub Gallery Edition is limited to 300 pieces, includes a certificate of authenticity and is offered in deluxe collector’s packaging.

  1. A great deal on the product of a lifetime

Posted by Joe McIntyre on 30th Mar 2024

Like the Seaview, the Flying Sub is a beautiful and eye-catching piece of design that, once seen, is rarely forgotten. It’s a tribute to those working Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea that, fifty plus years later, it’s still recognised and admired.

The Moebius 1:32 metal diecast with lights and sound captures the onscreen Flying Sub hero model to a tee. It has been carefully crafted to match its onscreen counterpart, with lights and sound to accentuate the experience. The resin plinth depicting a turbulent sea is a great display option. The fact that the model can be powered from an adaptor or a USB connector is very welcome.

The model comes with a branded box for storage, designed to resemble the sort of locked dispatch box that might be found in Admiral’s Nelson’s office.

Made of metal, it’s a heavy item, and will incur additional postage, but is well worth it. This is probably the best model of the Flying Sub ever to be released. It’s a must for the serious collector.

A word about FABGearUSA as well. Communications were clear, dispatch was prompt and shipping costs to the United Kingdom acceptable. The model arrived safe and sound about a fortnight after it was ordered. A perfect experience.

  2. Every time I catch a glimpse I smile.

I only powered it up once to see the lights on and such. It's great. Where it sits I don't have a plug, but that doesn't matter. I smile every time I catch a glimpse of the Flying Sub in the corner of my eye. I'm really glad I bought this.

Well first the wave broke , so I have to glue it and very fragile. On the tv show the flying sub had lights flashing on the back of Nelson side, none in the model. The top pièce it's hard to clip. But nice overhall. But fragile to manipulate.

  4. Nelson would have appreciated

Very nice model, looking very realistic, made of metal and certainly much better looking than any plastic kit, without the trouble of assembling it. Yes it is expansive, though I jump on the occasion when the web site was on sale. But if you are a serious fan of "Voyage" like me, you will be very happy with this great piece of nostalgia

  5. Flying Sub Lights & Sound Collectible

Posted by Jeffrey Hastings on 22nd May 2019

Model is nicely detailed, if pricey, even when it was on sale. Expensive if you dismiss collectible aspect but that is a main point. The lighting inside is amazing and the sound is interesting, if a bit tinny due to small speakers. I'd passed on the Jupiter 2 and Seaview collectibles when they were offered so I didn't want to miss this one. For someone who doesn't build their own from kits, this is likely your one chance to get an accurate FS-1 replica in 1/32nd scale. Very nice but treat it with gloves, literally, it's quite fragile and can't take any significant shock.

Although I'm basically pleased with this stunning model, I was disappointed that the blue trim on the top & bottom of the craft was way out of alignment with the blue trim below the front window. I covered this up with touch up paint.
