Gene Roddenberry cast Gary to star in his TV series The Lieutenant, which led him to star in the Star Trek pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before”.  Soon after, he appeared as “Frank Poole” in Kubrick’s 2001:A Space Odyssey, today considered to be one of the finest films ever made.
